A study on geomorphological conditions for riparian vegetation using high-definition topographic data

Interactions between ecological and fluvial systems are active in a riparian environment with frequent occurrences of floods and sediment transport. Under such conditions, changes in sediment surface morphology may significantly affect differential growth of riparian vegetation. In order to examine the effects of topographic conditions on vegetation growth or vise versa, we investigate detailed topographic conditions using high definition topographic data, as well as vegetation information such as plant mass and types. Both TLS and UAS are used to obtain the detailed surface morphology of the gravel bar in the Kowai River near Christchurch, New Zealand. A post-processing kinematic GNSS is used for the georeference of the TLS and UAS data. Analyses of the high-definition data of topography enable differentiating stable and unstable areas in the gravel deposits, and the relationships between the topographic conditions and the riparian vegetation mass and types will be investigated.
