The Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) for Research includes datasets that cannot be provided without restriction due to usage conditions, copyright, or other limitations, as well as datasets granted by companies and organizations for research purposes. Therefore, applicants must first apply for Joint Research involving the use of the Spatial Data Infrastructure, following the Regulations on Joint Research. Applications will be reviewed, and upon approval, applicants will be granted permission to use the datasets and services as Joint Research Investigators of the Center.
All application procedures for Joint Research are conducted online. Please refer to the Application Instructions and apply via the Joint Research Assist System (JoRAS). Once approved, datasets and services will be available through JoRAS (some datasets and services excluded).
Q1. Who is eligible to apply from outside Japan? Researchers affiliated with universities or research institutes outside Japan can apply to use JoRAS. The principal investigator (PI) should be a faculty member or equivalent, and other faculty members and students may participate as Project Members. Students may participate if they share the same affiliation as the PI or another faculty member participating as a Project Member, and are supervised by that PI or faculty member.
Q2. Are there additional review steps or ethics requirements for overseas users? Depending on the dataset and the policy of the original data provider, applications from overseas may undergo additional review. You may be asked to submit documents such as a certificate of completion of a research ethics training course or an extra consent/agreement form; any such requirements will be communicated during the review.
Q3. How long does the review process take for overseas applications? The review period varies by dataset and proposal, but applications from overseas institutions may take longer than domestic ones because we sometimes need to consult with external data providers.
Q4. Which datasets can be used outside Japan? Only datasets explicitly labeled as “Accessible Worldwide” can be used outside Japan.
Q5. Can I use JoRAS data with generative AI services (e.g., ChatGPT)? As a rule, you must not upload JoRAS data or derivatives to external generative AI services, since this counts as third-party provision. Limited exceptions may be granted only after prior approval for tools that guarantee no training on user data.
