Abstract

16世紀末の徳川家康の入府以降、河川の付け替えや運河の開削、湿地帯の埋め立てなど天下普請がおこなわれ、政治・経済・文化の中心となる江戸の巨大城下町が誕生した。その後も、火災被害回避のための町地拡大や太平の時代における寺社後背地の活用、さらにはや参勤交代制による人口増にも対応しうる全国的な流通システムの発展と地廻経済圏の漸進的生成がみられるなか、江戸の消費部門に奉仕するための生産と流通の仕組みが段階を経ながら、周縁部への拡大を伴って形成された。必需的消費と裁量的消費の双方に関わる繊維・衣料品の流通も同様の発展経路を辿ったことはよく知られているが、1960～70年代にかけて同業種における卸売商業の「西遷」が顕著化したことは、これまで等閑視されてきた。従前の江戸城東側の下町（日本橋～岩本町）に集積していた繊維卸売商の立地は、近代産業の勃興とともに墨田川流域まで拡張し、後に関東大震災や第二次大戦による被害あるいは「山の手」の開発などの影響をうけ、渋谷や港、新宿区といった都心西部地域に重心を移動させることとなった。本研究では、繊維・衣料品卸売商の「西遷」プロセスについて、小売商業の地域構造の変化との関連性を想定しつつ、空間データを用いて明らかにするとともに、「西遷」以降現代に至るまでのこれら地域における同業種の卸売・小売商の関係の質的・量的変化についての分析を流通論の視座から試みる。

The history of the commercial development in the central Tokyo goes back to the end of the 16th. Since then, considerable efforts had been made to build an urban infrastructure sustaining the lives of both the ruling and the ruled classes in the megacity. An important part of this was a nation-wide distribution network that spanned the spatio-temporal and informational gaps between the dispersed production of commodities and the demands for them. Distributive trades in textiles and clothing were amongst those that witnessed the formation of commercial agglomerations in the vicinities of the old town to the east of the Edo castle. Although there appeared signs of geographical shift in the center of retail trades in the pre-WWII periods, it was only the mid-1960s to 1970s that a number of principal textiles-clothing wholesalers embarked on relocating their head offices from the old town to the newly developed commercial districts in the western part of the central Tokyo. This research is to analyze the process of the locational shift of the textile-clothing wholesalers’ agglomerations from the old town to the west-end destinations, such as Shibuya, Minato, and Shinjuku wards with the use of GIS. With the interactions amongst production, consumption, and retail distribution as agents to bring about the change in wholesale distribution structure in mind, this study will also attempt to depict the phases of transformation of the internal organization and functions within in the course of the spatial shift of these commercial agglomerations in the mid-1960s and 1970s.
