High definition 3D measurements of weathered building walls

Long-term exposures of rock walls in cultural buildings often causes the deformation of rock surfaces by weathering. Accurate recording of surface condition of such weathered walls is a crucial issue for the conservation of such cultural heritage. Here we apply the terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) method to measure the three-dimensional morphology, as well as the intensity of laser returns, of the surface of rock walls of buildings including Orval Abbey in the Gaume region of Belgium. The high-definition data of the wall surface is utilized to unravel the detailed distribution of deformed rock surfaces mainly by salt weathering. An SfM-MVS photogrammetry approach is also used to thoroughly identify the weathered zones in the same sites. The method will also be applied to other sites.
