Abstract 1970年以降の日本の都市集積パターンの変化を多地域経済集積理論のインプリケーションに基づき説明する。過去50年間において、高速道路・新幹線網など高速交通網の整備、インターネットを介した通信網の一般化を経て、日本国内の輸送・通信アクセスは格段に向上した。これに伴い、全国的には、小都市群が淘汰され大都市への一層の経済集積が起こる一方で、各都市レベルでは郊外化が進み、都心および都市自体の存在が曖昧化した。このように、都市集積が進みながら都市そのものが消滅するプロセスを国勢調査および事業所企業統計・経済センサスの地域メッシュデータを用いて実証するとともに、その背景メカニズムを最新の経済集積理論を用いて説明し、日本の都市の未来を議論する。
Japan experienced substantial improvement in transport and information access in the past 50 years. Highway and high-speed railway networks have developed from scratch to cover the entire country, and the internet has become ubiquitous during this period. In the meantime, the agglomeration has proceeded towards large cities on a national scale. In contrast, at the city scale, substantial sprawl has taken place, and the spatial extent of business districts and that of cities themselves have become ambiguous, leading to the extinction of cities. We show this urban evolution in Japan using the Grid Square Statistics for Population Census, the Establishment and Enterprise Census, and the Economic Census of Japan. The results are interpreted based on the recent many-region theory of economic agglomeration.
