The accessibility of urban green areas has become an increasingly important topic in environmental justice literature. This research investigates the accessibility of parks in Tokyo to assess whether specific socioeconomic strata of the population face lower park accessibility. To answer this question, we first evaluate the park accessibility based on two accessibility measures: Euclidean distance and the enhanced two-step floating catchment area (E2SFCA) method. It is critical to use road network data when computing E2SFCA, as Euclidean distance ignores the walkability of a given path, thus producing less reliable estimates. We obtain socioeconomic variables from census and other survey data. Cluster and factor analysis may highlight the latent dimensions of these variables. Moreover, different park-specific variables for park quality will be collected to derive indicators of park quality. This will determine whether specific population groups are relegated to lower-quality parks. Finally, associations of the park accessibility to the socioeconomic variables will be investigated through spatial regression analysis. We also examine people’s park use using mobile phone data. The catchment area of each park and accessibility indices, such as the average park access rate by geographic units, are extracted from the data. Then, we assess spatial inequality in park use via spatial regression and Gini index analyses to see its potential association with the socioeconomic status of neighborhoods.
