Cultural Visibility in the Digital Image of the City: Mismatches and Implications for Machizukuri in Tokyo

My current research examines how digitally mediated cultural visibility can inform urban regeneration and participatory planning in Tokyo. In regeneration projects driven by economic revitalisation and commercial development, planning systems often prioritise formally recognised heritage sites or clearly defined tourist attractions, while overlooking everyday cultural places that may hold social, symbolic, or place-based value. However, global digital platforms such as Flickr suggest that some places lacking formal recognition may already function as culturally visible and attractive urban spaces from an external perspective.Using Tokyo as the case study, this research analyses geotagged Flickr photos to identify spatial clusters of digital cultural visibility, and compares these patterns with official cultural heritage records, redevelopment pressure, and urban functional factors such as commercial intensity and transport accessibility. Rather than treating social media data simply as a substitute for physical observation, the study uses it as evidence of an externally perceived digital image of the city. The research aims to reveal potential mismatches between formal planning recognition and digital cultural visibility. By doing so, it seeks to provide new insights into machizukuri.
