Abstract In recent years the concepts of smart growth, compact cities and new urbanism have penetrated the sustainability discourse under the premise that high density, mixed use cities might significantly reduce car use, and improve both the livability of cities as well as the health of its inhabitants. The underlying implication is that the built environment exerts a strong enough influence on individuals and households to effectively change their behavior. Although a considerable body of evidence a causal mechanism is yet to be established. This study aims at analzying the effect of the built environment on certain travel behavior such as trip frequency by mode and travelled distances, after controlling for individual preferences and attitudes as measures of residential self-selection. Failure to account for this might result in biased and inconsistent estimators of the true effect of the buit environment and urban form on travel behavior.
