Abstract Using this synthetic flow data from Tokyo metropolitan area, and the travel survey data from the other five cities (namely Hong Kong, Boston, Chicago, Sao Paolo, and London), we are looking into how urban spatial structure and social structure impact local people’s mobility pattern. Here, the spatial structure is defined by the distance-based network relationship between place of interests (POI), and the transit accessibility to the critical amenities in each city, such as hospital, schools, restaurants, groceries, sports center, etc. The social structure is defined by the gender, age, and income level provided by the travel survey and people flow data. Considering these selected six cities have very different density, public transit accessibility, and cultural context, we hope this study can extend the current knowledge in human mobility.
Specifically, we focus how the spatial and social structure bring people from different age, income, and education background together. Our first study using the data from Hong Kong, “Residential and experienced social segregation: the roles of different transport modes, metro extensions, and longitudinal changes in Hong Kong” has already published at Humanities and Social Sciences Communications. In our study, we found that public transit can be an equalizer: buses play a significant positive role in promoting a socially mixed environment that encourage people from different income group to meet each other. However, not all transit networks serve disadvantaged communities equally – comparisons of multiple US cities reveal wide variability in how well low-income neighborhoods are connected by transit (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). By including the six cities, we will identify where transit investments would yield the greatest equity benefits, considering the very different cultural norm.
We have processed the data and conduct preliminary analysis with the data. We have shared the data exploration steps via Github (https://github.com/brookefzy/GlobalTCS/tree/main/_script/tokyo).
