Abstract

This research sheds light on the relationship between spatial environment of open spaces and visitor patterns to them, building statistical models representing the relationship based on GPS data, satellite imagery, and various other spatial data. In dense cities, open spaces, such as parks, are valuable resources in the sense that creation of a new open space generally requires a large amount of financial and political efforts. Therefore, one of important policy goals regarding open spaces should be bringing more people, unless overcrowded, to them so that the invest of space, money and political efforts is rewarded. However, there is a lack of research regarding which element of open space environment attracts more people. Hence, the first goal of this research is to build a good prediction model for volume of visitors of open spaces. Then fluctuating patterns of visitors in various time periods will also be investigated with additional models. Regarding spatial environment, special attention will be paid to landscape elements inside and around open spaces along with surrounding demographics and transportation. Broadening the understanding on the relationship between visual and physical environment and human behavior through this investigation is another important goal of this research. In sum, having knowledge on the factors that affect visitors will help policy makers, planners, and designers throughout the process of creating and managing open spaces.
